How to Check Your Hot Water Tank's Age
A quick look at the rating label tells you how old your tank is and what kind it is, which is most of what you need to decide on a repair or replacement.
Request a plumberFind the label
On the side of the tank, usually near the top or beside the access panel.
The date
Most makers code the manufacture date into the serial number. Search the brand with "serial number date" to decode it.
Size
The capacity is listed, often in litres and US gallons.
Fuel
Gas tanks list input and gas type; electric tanks list voltage and wattage.
What age tells you
Many tanks last around eight to twelve years. Plan ahead if yours is in that range and showing signs of wear.
Next step
Send the label details with your request. See hot water tank service.
Look around the tank
Check the floor around the tank for water, the pipes on top for green or white crust and the vent on a gas tank for rust or gaps. Mention anything you find when you send a request.
Winter demand
In winter, very cold incoming water means the tank works harder and hot water runs out sooner. If that's the only time it struggles, a slightly larger tank or a tankless unit sized for cold water may solve it.
Expansion tanks
Some homes need a small expansion tank near the hot water tank so heated water has room to expand. Ask whether yours needs one when the tank is serviced or replaced.
Take a photo
Snap a clear photo of the label and keep it on your phone. It answers most of a plumber's questions in one go and saves a trip down to the basement.
