Lumsden is a town in the Qu'Appelle Valley about 31 kilometres northwest of Regina, surrounded by the RM of Lumsden No. 189. It works as both a farming community and an unofficial suburb of Regina.
What that means for your plumbing
Lumsden has a long history of flooding, so water management matters here more than in most places. A working sump pump, a well-kept backwater valve and a hot water tank raised off the floor can all limit damage. See sump pits and backwater valves.
Acreages around town
Many properties outside town are acreages with private wells and septic systems. Pressure problems, short cycling or slow drains everywhere at once usually trace back to those systems.
Happy Hollow
Settlers first arrived in 1881, and the area was known as Happy Hollow. When the railway came through in 1889, the town was renamed for Hugh Lumsden, a senior engineer with the railway. Lumsden flooded repeatedly, with major floods in 1892, 1904, 1916, 1948 and 1969, and the highest water in its history in 1974, when volunteers came from Regina and nearby communities to help sandbag. The town then straightened the Qu'Appelle River's channel and built dikes, and in 2011, after record snowfall, it was at risk but did not flood. In 2002 Harrowsmith magazine named it the province's "prettiest" town. If you live in the valley, keep sump and backwater equipment in good order.
