Backwater Valves & Sump Pits · Regina, SK

Backwater Valves & Sump Pits in Regina, SK

Most of Regina's rain falls between May and August, often in heavy storms. When the sewers fill up, sewage can flow backward toward basements. A backwater valve helps stop it.

How backups happen

During a heavy storm, the sewer system can fill faster than it drains. Water then looks for the lowest opening it can find, which in most homes is the basement floor drain.

Backwater valves

A backwater valve fits on the main sewer line and closes when sewage starts flowing back toward the house. It needs to be the right type, installed in the right place and kept clean so the flap closes properly.

Maintenance

Open the access cover now and then and check that nothing is stopping the flap from closing. During a storm, avoid running water in the house if the valve is closed, because waste can't leave until it opens.

Sump pits

Some homes have a sump pit and pump that collect water from around the foundation. Test the pump before the spring melt and summer storms by pouring water into the pit; it should start, empty the pit and stop.

Discharge lines

Sump water should be discharged away from the foundation and not into the sanitary sewer. In winter, make sure the outlet isn't frozen or buried in snow.

Getting help

Tell the plumber whether you've had backups before, when they happened and whether you have a sump pit. Send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Check valves

Most sump pumps have a check valve on the discharge pipe so water doesn't run back into the pit when the pump stops. If you hear water rushing back after the pump shuts off, the check valve may have failed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for a backwater valve?
Usually, yes. Ask the plumber and check with the City of Regina about requirements and any programs.
Can a backwater valve stop all flooding?
It stops sewage flowing back through the sewer line. It doesn't stop groundwater coming through walls or floors.
