Pilot Butte is a town between Highway 46 and the Trans-Canada Highway in the White Butte region east of Regina. It had 2,638 people in 2021, up 23 percent from 2016, and is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Edenwold No. 158.

Boggy Creek

Before European settlement, Indigenous peoples camped near Boggy Creek and used the butte as a lookout point. Low ground near a creek can have higher groundwater in spring, which matters for basements and sump pits.

Brick plants and the railway

The Cree name, Otasawâpiwin, means "lookout point". European settlement in the area began in the 1840s, and Pilot Butte was established in 1882 on the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline. Its brick plants and sand and gravel deposits helped it develop faster than nearby settlements. After the First World War, most of its residents left and many buildings, including a hotel, the train station and the water tower, were dismantled or destroyed. The completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in the 1950s brought people back. Homes from different waves of growth sit side by side, so plumbing ranges in age.
