Balgonie is a town about 25 kilometres east of Regina, where Highways 10, 46, 364 and 622 meet the Trans-Canada. It had 1,765 people at the 2016 census and is surrounded by the RM of Edenwold No. 158.

A model farm and an airplane

Balgonie was named for Balgonie Castle in Scotland. The first Canadian Pacific train ran through the area in 1882, and a post office followed in 1883. In 1884 Sir John Lister Kaye set up a model farm near the railway. A school was built in 1891, and Balgonie became a village in 1903 and a town in 1907. One of its best-known residents, William Wallace Gibson, built the first Canadian-built airplane and flew it in Victoria in 1910.
